Big Sky Senior Services, AARP of Montana, Family Services and Adult Resource Alliance are joining forces to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) by hosting a Shred a Thon on Saturday, June 17th from 9am-Noon at the Adult Resource Alliance located at 1505 Avenue D, Billings, MT. Senior Citizens are encouraged to protect themselves from identify theft by bringing their documents to be shredded free of charge. Food donations for Family Services will be accepted.

WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders.  A U. S. Administration on Aging study estimates that up to 1 million elderly are physically abused, neglected or financially exploited each year. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported; as many as 23.5 cases go unreported.

Many of our elderly neighbors endure suffering every day. They are the victims of financial exploitation, neglect and physical or emotional abuse. These frightened elders, are from all walks of life, all races, and all ethnic groups, and they live in your neighborhood. They may be afraid to speak out because the abuser is often a member of their own family, a caregiver upon whom they depend, or someone else that they know. They fear retribution, lack of care, embarrassment and institutionalization.

Montana is aging at a faster rate than most of the other States in the Union. U.S census projections indicated that by 2030, Montana is expected to rank at least 5th in the Nation in the percentage of people over the age of 65. Addressing the needs of an aging Montana will continue to be an issue over the next 15 to 20 years.
